This is the largest of the mounted cutouts to date. The

idea was inspired by the name of an actual species,

though they are a fairly small fish compared to my

creation.

After getting the canvas above scanned, and having done a couple other fish as cutout mounts, I decided to cut the profile from the canvas scan, mount it to a cutout profile, then paint over the plants that had been overlapping the fish.

I thought a Northern Pike would be a ‘natural’ for my ‘stained glass’ style. I first painted this on a canvas.

The cutout was painted on a ‘wood blank’ I had for reproductions of a realistic brown trout. A play on ‘rainbow’ inspired the spectral  band across the body.

‘Glass’ refers to my stained glass style.

‘species’ that were very stylized, and were not intended

This is the second of my trout series and probably second in the time it took to paint. Like my ‘Wave Trout’ this one’s ‘bubbly’ theme was first to be watery. But once I started working on it I just started incorporating jewel-like geometry.

Trout are the fish I have the most experience fishing for, so I know them well. I called this one ‘wave’ because the flowing patterns I created throughout.

Like many of theses cutouts, this one took a lot of time to paint. But this one set the record, it probably took at least 60 hours to paint this trout.

Presented as either a wall hanging or shelf/table stand.

The hangers I built for the wall mounts hang the fish 1.5″

from the wall to cast a nice shadow as a real mounted

trophy would, see the Largemouth photo above. A cutout close to the wall will not cast a shadow so offset.

I do have some handmade reproductions of some of the

‘species’ available on either handcut or waterjet cut profiles. It is my hope to somewhat ‘mass produce’ copies, and an initial test had very good results with a company in Colorado cutting profiles AND printing reproductions but I have encountered funding issues I’m still trying to resolve.

For the reproductions, I was cutting the ‘blanks’ by hand out of 1” pine as I had the original artwork. I had the original paintings scanned and would hand cut and hand glue the prints onto black painted 1″ pine silhouettes. I also worked with 2 waterjet companies in Georgia to bulk cut some profiles for me.

I started exploring actually repainitng fish mount ‘blanks’

taxidermists use. Then when I realized I wanted to reproduce

them, the more real shapes would be problematic. I also love

woodworking and it occurred to me: Why not just cut out

wooden profiles?

I am an obsessive fisherman. Can fish sunrise to sunset when

given the opportunity. Often used to think if I could customize species what could I come up with?

If interested in buying my art, whether original or reproductions, please contact me. Long term goal is to set up online sales and inventory. May take a while.

All my original works are framed. Some of the frames are very heavy so until I can automate my gallery pricing and shipping I will probably have to do custom price and shipping quotes

(depending on 'ship to' location).

I do have several framed reproductions as well, hope to eventually link photos of all available reproductions as framed, for now if you would like to see framing pics, let me know.

Unframed reproductions will be shipped in poster tubes.

While I do not have prints of all my work in stock I do have a lot, and with at least a week or two turnaround I can get to the print shop and get reproductions printed.

The prints are available in their original size and most can be printed smaller as well. Let me know what you are interested in.
